What are the different types of stab proof vests?

When people talk about types, they are usually referring to the material of the outer shell or armor plate. There are three main types of outer shells.

1. Concealed vests (concealable, undershirt style vests): These vests are designed to be worn concealed under clothing. They strike a balance between protection and flexibility, allowing for ease of movement and comfort. Concealed vests are often used by undercover law enforcement or security personnel who need a concealed protection solution. The outer shell is often made of a softer material than overt/tactical vests, such as polycotton, to prevent irritation when worn under an undershirt.

2. Overt vests: Overt vests are worn over clothing and are highly visible. These vests act as a visual deterrent and are often worn by security officers, prison staff, or other personnel who work in public-facing jobs. Overt vests often have additional features, such as high-visibility panels, Velcro patches for badges, docking stations for equipment, etc. They are often available in tabard (head-mounted, bib-style) or front zipper styles. They are usually made of sturdier materials, such as Cordura.

3. Tactical stab proof vests: Tactical stab proof vests are designed for law enforcement or military applications. They are built to withstand more rigorous use and include additional pockets and attachment points for carrying equipment. In many cases, they use the PALS/MOLLE system to attach the equipment. They tend to be made of very sturdy materials and are worn over clothing.
